St. Peter’s Partnerships, one of 11 ‘Kickstarter’ organisations chosen to pilot the national Community Organisers scheme, is starting the hunt for community organisers in Tameside, Greater Manchester. Community Organisers is a government funded scheme which aims to train 5,000 ‘community organisers - individuals who will work in local communities around the country to bring people together, listen to ideas, build networks and support people to tackle the local issues which are important to them. St. Peter’s Partnerships was selected by Locality, the organisation chosen by the government to deliver the scheme, as one of the initial organisations which together will recruit and host the first 30 community organisers. Kickstarters will help the programme get off to a flying start due to having strong community networks, existing structures in which community organisers can immediately be hosted and a range of practical support and management already in place. Karen Butigan, Chief Executive of St. Peter’s Partnerships, said: “We’re really pleased that Tameside is going to be one of the first pilot areas for the Community Organisers scheme. There are so many people out there who are dedicated, motivated and really care about making their neighbourhood a better place to be. “We’re very much looking forward to getting the recruitment process underway to identify Tameside’s community talent. We’re looking for resourceful, outgoing people of all ages with the ability to empathise and encourage and who have a wide range of practical skills, from one-to-one listening to organising public meetings.” Jess Steele, who leads the Community Organisers programme at Locality said: “St. Peter’s Partnerships is a community-led organisation which brings people together to tackle the long-term local issues facing its local area. They are an experienced, innovative organisation working hard to make a genuine difference to local communities. We know they’ll choose some excellent community organisers for Tameside and offer them the very best support.” St. Peter’s Partnerships will recruit five trainee community organisers from the area and will host them while they undergo their training with Locality’s national training partner Re:generate. The trainee community organisers will then work in a neighbourhood chosen in consultation with local partners where they will put their training into practice and develop their skills. |
